How
much time off from work do I need to take ?
On
the day of surgery, you need to go home and rest. The next morning,
your uncorrected vision will be greatly improved although it may take
a week or more before you attain your best vision. Many patients drive
in for their post op visit the day after surgery and then go to work.
How
long does surgery take ?
You will be in the surgical suite for about 10 to 15 minutes. You
will be at the Laser Center for about an hour. You will need a driver
to take you home.
How
old do I have to be for LASIK ?
The youngest age is 18 years old. There is no upper age limit.
What
are the post operative restrictions?
After the procedure, you will go home and are advised to keep both
eyes closed for 2 hours and rest as much as possible. You will be
placing a protective shield over your eyes at night for one week.
It is recommended that you abstain from going swimming for a week
following surgery. You will be using antibiotic eye drops for one
week.
Is
there any pain ?
The
surgery is virtually painless.
Are
both eyes corrected at the same time ?
Although the vast majority of patients choose to have both eyes treated
at the same time, Dr. Jacobs allows each individual patient to make
his/her own decision.
Will
I ever need glasses again ?
Most patients will not need glasses for distance vision. Rarely, some
patients may still require thinner glasses for fine tuning. Presbyopia
begins between 40-50 years of age and this natural process demands
reading glasses for close vision.
Do
I need to do anything special since I am
currently wearing contact lenses ?
Contact lenses can alter the shape of your cornea. Prior
to LASIK, your cornea must be back to it's natural contour. Usually
soft contact lenses have minimal effect on your corneal shape and
you will be required to remove them for only one week prior to your
final pre-surgical testing. However, for patients who wear rigid gas
permeable lenses, it will take a period of time before any corneal
warpage has resolved. The general rule of thumb is one month of no
contact lens wear for every decade that contact lenses have been worn.
